Wrinkles under the eyes are inevitable as you age. However, lifestyle behaviors such as smoking, sun exposure and environmental pollutants may contribute to premature wrinkling as well. There are plenty of sophisticated methods of wrinkle removal such as Botox, face lifts and dermal fillers but they can be expensive. Instead of spending thousands on professional treatments, try some natural remedies instead.

Diet

The Journal of the American College of Nutrition states that diet plays an important role in keeping wrinkles at bay. If you consume a diet rich in zinc, selenium, iron, vitamin C and monounsaturated fats, you can help prevent fine lines under the eyes. A wide array of fruits and vegetables like Brazil nuts, avocados, grapefruits, spinach and broccoli contain these nutrients as well as plenty of antioxidants. Omega-3 fatty acids found in flaxseed oil and fish are helpful wrinkle remedies. Don't forget about water as well; drink at least eight 8-oz. glasses per day to keep your skin lubricated.

Exercise

A solid exercise program not only improves health and maintains weight, it can also keep your facial skin looking smooth. Any activity that gets your heart rate pumping will increase blood circulation. This allows more oxygen and nutrients to reach the skin, giving it a healthy, youthful glow. Sweating opens up your pores and helps oil, makeup and other debris to be washed away.

Facial Steaming

Regular facial steaming cleanses impurities out of your pores and promotes circulation. This can be done in two ways; an at-home steamer or your sink. Professional steamers have reservoirs you fill with water to create steam, or you may close the sink drain and fill it with hot water. Whichever method you choose, simply drape a towel over your head and lean your face into the steam for at least five to 10 minutes daily.

Prevention

According to the Mayo Clinic, avoiding certain external factors can help prevent wrinkles from forming prematurely. The most damaging are sun exposure, smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke. The clinic suggests you use a sunscreen that blocks UVA and UVB rays if you have to be in the sun. Also, wear protective clothing and hats. The nicotine in cigarettes constricts your blood vessels, so essential nutrients are unable to reach the skin. This causes skin to sag and create fine lines under the eyes.
