Suffering from dry skin can be very uncomfortable; it can turn plump cells into shriveled ones and create fine lines or wrinkles. If your skin becomes too dry, you may need to visit a dermatologist. Dry skin may result from environmental factors, illness or excess bathing. Fortunately, there are a number of vitamins that can assist in preventing dry skin by keeping it hydrated and healthy.
Vitamin B3
Vitamin B3 is one of the eight B vitamins, also called nicotinic acid. It helps the body make fuel to burn off and assists in metabolizing protein and fats. It is necessary for healthy hair, skin and eyes and ensures the nervous system is functioning properly. It also helps the body to make various sex- and stress-related hormones. It is rare for anyone to develop a serious deficiency of vitamin B3 but mild deficiencies do occur which can result in dry and scaly skin. All B vitamins keep the skin hydrated and toned.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that contains antioxidant properties. Vitamin E comes in eight different isomers. It has been proposed to treat and prevent a number of health conditions such as cancer and heart disease because of the antioxidant properties it holds, according to the Mayo Clinic. Vitamin E helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the face and improve the skin's overall texture, according to Northwestern Health Sciences University.
Vitamin H
Also called biotin, this vitamin is part of the B group of vitamins and works to help the body make energy. It is necessary for healthy skin and hair. It also metabolizes fats, carbs and amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein. It is water-soluble and can be found in many cosmetic products. Although a biotin deficiency is rare, it can occur and as a result, you could experience hair loss, dry scaly skin and a painful tongue, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
