How to Eliminate Age Spots

Age spots form on the face of your skin when you have been out in the sun for too long. Age spots can happen to you at any age, but for the most part, age spots strike people over the age of 40. Age spots appear on your skin when the amount of melanin in your skin cells decreases. When you are in the sun for extended periods of time, the UV rays break down the amount of collagen and elastin in your skin. Elastin and collagen are the key ingredients to keeping your skin young and fresh looking. When you have less elastin and collagen in your skin, you are more susceptible to age spots. The key to eliminating your age spots is staying out of the sun, taking vitamins, and keeping your skin clean.

Step 1

Exfoliate and clean your skin. Buy a loofah or skin scrubber from your local pharmacy. When you are in the shower or bathtub the next time, rub your age spots with your loofah firmly. Make sure you add soap or a moisturizer to your loofah. The scrubber will remove the very top layer of skin, the layer of skin that contains all the dead skin. When you get rid of the dead skin, you remove the layer of skin that makes your age spots look darker. By consistently scrubbing your skin, you can eliminate your age spots.

Step 2

Put an over-the-counter cream on your age spots. The Mayo Clinic recommends a cream that contains bleach, a retinoid, or steroids. You can find these at almost any pharmacy. If these creams don't work for you, visit your dermatologist for a stronger medication like hydroquinone or tretinoin.

Step 3

Limit your exposure to the sun. Exposing your skin to UV rays is the main cause of age spots, so you must stay out of the sun if you want to eliminate them. If you have to be outside, cover your skin with long sleeves, long pants, a hat and sunglasses. Also, make sure you wear a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

Step 4

Put buttermilk on your skin to eliminate your age spots. Buttermilk has a natural bleach in it that works to gradually fade your age spots. Buttermilk helps your cells in your skin grow faster, which can heal and replace the damaged cells around your age spots with new, healthier cells. Buy buttermilk at your grocery store, pour into a bowl and soak a cotton ball in the liquid. Make sure the buttermilk evaporates into your skin.

Step 5

Put lemon juice on your age spots. Lemon juice works in a similar way to buttermilk, in that it contains a chemical that over time will naturally bleach and eliminate your age spots. You can either squeeze the juice from a lemon or buy a bottle of lemon juice. Pour the liquid into a bowl and dip a cotton ball in the juice. Squeeze onto your age spots and let evaporate.
