If you or someone you know sustains a mild hand injury, wrapping the injured hand in elastic bandage can help. Wrapping puts light pressure on the tissue surrounding the injury and gives the area added support. Wrapping also reduces swelling and may be used to hold a splint or hot and cold pack in place–and hold a bandage in the case of a laceration. Wrapping an injured hand only takes a few simple steps.

Step 1

Choose the width of the bandage you're going to use. They typically come in 2, 3 and 4 inch width for children, women and men, respectively.

Step 2

Place the loose end of the bandage on the outside of the wrist. Wrap it once around the wrist toward the inside, and then over the back of the hand, before bringing it up diagonally across the palm.

Step 3

Pull the bandage between the thumb and index finger, over the back of the hand again and around and under the thumb.

Step 4

Repeat the sequence until the injured area is covered and supported. End your wrapping at the wrist–or criss-cross diagonally up the lower arm–and secure with medical tape or a metal clip.
