Cephalexin suspension is a medication in a class of drugs known as cephalosporin antibiotics. According to Drugs.com, cephalexin is used to treat infections caused by bacteria, including upper respiratory infections, ear infections, skin infections and urinary tract infections. The medication is only available with a prescription, and should be taken for the entire time that it is prescribed for.
Gastrointestinal Discomfort
Cephalexin may cause gastrointestinal discomfort. Symptoms can include mild nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Taking cephalexin with food or milk may lessen these effects. These side effects may be temporary until the body adjusts to this medication. Severe nausea and vomiting should be brought to the attention of a healthcare provider. These side effects may lead to dehydration, which can be dangerous and lead to additional complications.
Fatigue and Dizziness
Patients taking cephalexin suspension have reported experiencing fatigue and dizziness. Those who experience these side effects should use caution while driving or completing tasks which may be dangerous until these side effects subside. Taking this medication at night may help to diminish these effects. Dizziness that is accompanied by confusion, agitation or hallucinations should be reported to a physician immediately.
Mild Skin Rash
According to MedlinePlus, a mild skin rash may occur while taking cephalexin. This rash may or may not itch. Patients can ask their physician if an over-the-counter antihistamine cream would be safe to use for the relief of mild itching. A severe rash may be a sign of a severe reaction to cephalexin, and should be brought to the attention of a doctor prior to taking another dose of cephalexin.
Vaginal Itching or Discharge
Women taking cephalexin suspension may experience vaginal itching or discharge. In some cases, antibiotics may cause a vaginal infection. They work in the body by killing the bad bacteria, but will also kill some of the body's good bacteria. A lack of natural bacterial flora creates an environment that's more susceptible to Candida, or yeast. Symptoms of a vaginal infection include itching, redness, discharge and pain during intercourse. These symptoms should be reported to a gynecologist. A vaginal exam and culture can accurately diagnose the presence of infection.
