Attempting to hit a golf ball that is positioned below your feet can be an exercise in futility for many golfers. Something about the ball not being on level ground just throws everything off kilter. Often times, the ball ends up being hit thin, or way to the right, or not it at all. Hitting the golf ball solidly when it is below your feet is possible if you follow a few simple steps.

Step 1

Take a few practice swings close to your ball to see where the club bottoms out. This will be where you place the ball in your stance.

Step 2

Flex your knees and bend your body way over when you address the ball. Point your chest at the golf ball and stay in that position throughout your swing. This will help you stay down on the ball and not top it like so many golfers do when it is below their feet.

Step 3

Aim your body to the left as you set up for the shot if you are a right-handed golfer. Hitting with the ball below your feet has a tendency to produce shots that flare to the right, so you will need to compensate.

Step 4

Choose one more club than you feel you will need to carry the distance of the shot. If it is typically an 8-iron for you, use a 7-iron instead.

Step 5

Allow your club to swing in an up-and-down motion and not around your body. With the ball lower than your body, an up-and-down swing will feel more natural.
