Every second children are born in hospitals and birthing centers across the entire United States. Many of these children will be lucky enough to be born into a supportive and loving family who has the capability and resources to raise them. Unfortunately, many others will be born into unstable environments, or to parents who are not ready to have a child. When this occurs, the child often ends up in the adoption process. If you are feeling like there is something missing in your life, there are many good reason to adopt one of these children.
Infertility
One good primary reasons why many couples adopt is because of problems conceiving a child of their own. There are many reasons that infertility can occur in a couple for both men and women, with infertility affecting millions of people every year. In fact, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 7.3 million women alone seek out infertility services each year. Adopting provides an option for these couples to still have and enjoy children of their own.
Labor Problems
Another good reason to adopt a child is if you do not want to go through the pain of delivery or have physical health problems that can make the labor process dangerous. For example, some women with severe cases of diabetes or heart problems may choose to adopt instead of putting both their health and the baby's health at risk. For others, the pain of labor may be too much, and an adoption still provides a child without the pain associated with the delivery process.
Relative Help
Another good reason to adopt is when you have a relative or family member in need. Life can be unpredictable, sometimes leaving children without parents. This can occur because the parent is no longer able to take care of the child due to problems with finances, abuse or drugs, or in some case the death of the parent. A relative adopting these children can help make the transition easier since often times there is already a relationship between the child and the relative.
Making a Difference
One of the most noble reasons to adopt a child is simply to give a child in need a better life. The National Survey of Adopted Parents estimates that in 2007, 661,000 children were adopted from the foster care system, and another 677,000 children were adopted through domestic adoptions in the United States. Many of these children, especially from the foster care system, have had little stability since being removed from their families with many coming from unsafe homes of abuse and drug use. Adopting these children helps bring them into a family that hopefully, not only provides stability, but also provides the love and support needed to grow up healthy and balanced.
Genetics
Some couples may choose to adopt due to the risks of passing a genetically related disease to a child of their own. For example, Down syndrome can be passed on through genes, raising the risks that your child can develop the disorder. These risks are typically increased with the age of the mother, states the Merck Corporation. If risks are high enough, adoption may be a safer option to fulfill the need for a child.
