While many Americans brace themselves against frosty December weather, Miami experiences an average high of 78 degrees F during the last month of the year, with a comfortable average low of 62. Opportunities for outdoor fun are plentiful for the whole family. Races and golf outings provide the chance to get in some healthy competition. Tours can be educational and fitness-enhancing, and parks offer something for everyone. And of course, no vacation would be complete without a wide range of healthy, delicious dining options.

Running

Runners are in luck in December in Miami. The warm winter weather allows for races throughout the season, without the intense heat of summer. In the Miami area, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Holiday Run takes place in Palmetto Bay. The race has 5k and 10k runs, as well as wheelchair, men's, women's and children's divisions. Everyone who finishes receives a ribbon.The run takes place in mid-December.

Walking

If walking is more your speed, consider touring the city on foot. The Miami Design Preservation League hosts December 90-minute walking tours showcasing the city's renowned art deco architecture. Or listen to tales of glamorous celebrities in Miami as you stroll down Ocean Drive. Food tours allow you to sample a variety of Miami's culinary delights, and burn off some of the calories as you move from one restaurant to the next at a leisurely pace.

Golf

Miami is a great golf city. The park district operates six golf courses, and the city boasts a multitude of other golf courses and resorts. Package deals are frequently available, and of course, the warm weather means you can hit the links throughout the month of December. If you'd rather sit at the sidelines and benefit the developmentally disabled as well, sponsor a player at the annual City of Miami Golf Classic. The early December tournament benefits the Sandra DeLucca Developmental Center for the disabled.

Museums

Outdoor activities are not the only way to enjoy yourself in Miami in December. Get a healthy dose of culture by visiting the city's museums. Check out current exhibitions at the Miami Art Museum, or take in permanent collections, including contemporary works by Chuck Close, James Rosenquist, Carrie May Weems and Odili Donald Odita. The whole family will enjoy the Miami Science Museum. Its planetarium, wildlife center and always-changing exhibits are available at a discount to children and seniors.

Food

With its year-round swimsuit weather and plethora of beautiful people, Miami offers plenty of healthy dining options. In addition to an amazing array of restaurants offering fresh seafood, as well as food choices from around the globe, the city boasts dozens of vegetarian- and vegan-friendly options. Meat-free alternatives range from Ethiopian eateries to vegan delis. In fact, the city ranked No. 1 among the Physicians' Committee for Responsible Medicine's list of airports with the highest number of healthy vegetarian dining choices.
