With more than 200 species of freshwater fish and 500 species of saltwater fish, it's easy to see why the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission calls its state the "Fishing Capital of the World." Even beginning fishermen have the chance to make a great catch while enjoying the outdoors and getting in some exercise. Plus, fishing is an activity that helps keep you toned and active during the day before winding down and bringing your fish home for a healthy seafood dinner.

Types of Fish

Tampa Bay waters offer an abundance of fish, including redfish, snook and speckled trout. Expert anglers report tarpon, black drum weighing up to 40 pounds and Spanish mackerel in the waters off Tampa. It takes muscle to reel those in. Grouper, snapper and cobia are also plentiful, with the occasional spinner shark hooked by an adventurous sportfisherman. Fishing underneath Tampa Bay's bright skies also exposes anglers to healthy doses of Vitamin D-packed sunshine.

Fishing by Season

The amount of fish diminishes when the temperature is too cold or too hot, so toss out the lure in late spring or early autumn for optimum catch. Avoid fishing in the late morning or early afternoon in the summertime. That’s when fish cool off in deep water. Go for a swim or a brisk walk during these times and remember your sunscreen. Then, when the sun starts going down, grab your pole: You’ll catch more fish between sundown and dark as fish return to the water’s surface at those times.

Catching Fish on the Tampa Bay Estuary

Catching saltwater sportfish on the Estuary requires a license for noncommercial anglers, unless you fish from a fixed structure such as a bridge or dock. Keep fit by walking in the fresh air, then angle for flounder by docks and on sandy bottoms. You can catch them using sardines or live shrimp as bait. Find redfish around docks and channels. In warmest and coolest months, they respond to free-lined live shrimp or gold spoons. Fish for spotted sea trout in warm waters using grunts, soft, fish-like lures or live shrimp.

Charter Fishing Boats

Hop on a charter fishing boat to have an expert take you to the best fishing spots in Tampa Bay. There are several charter boats in the area, all helmed by fishermen familiar with local waters. The boat captains can lead you to the best places to catch snook, tarpon, redfish and sheepshead. The charter price may include bait, tackle and license. Bask in the refreshing air and take a jog along the shore before fishing on the charter boat to increase your energy for the trip and get in your daily exercise.

Licenses

Florida residents need a saltwater fishing license to catch fish from the shore. Anglers using a boat must get a different license. If you're caught fishing without a license, you will need to pay a fine and possibly go to court. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission issues a separate license for freshwater fishing. Bass Tournament participants can apply for a permit covering their contest and allowing a temporary exemption from bass limits. Licensed sportfishermen can keep fit walking or boating from one quality spot to the next.
