Physicians may prescribe the generically named medication metoclopramide to help in the treatment of several conditions. The medication, sold in the United States under two brand names, including Reglan, helps diabetics with a condition known as gastroparesis, the Mayo Clinic reports, by causing the intestines and stomach to contract more frequently. This can help reduce such problems as appetite loss, nausea, heartburn, bloating and vomiting. Similarly, doctors may prescribe it to reduce heartburn symptoms for people with gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Energy Decreases
When a person begins using Reglan, it can cause some non-serious side effects that should disappear as the person becomes accustomed to the drug, Drugs.com indicates. For example, the person may feel a decrease in normal amounts of energy to accomplish tasks. While physicians expect this side effect to cease on its own, Drugs.com indicates the person should ask a doctor about it if it continues or feels severe.
Diarrhea
Reglan can induce problems in the intestines particularly when the person starts using the medication. Because the medicine stimulates movement in the intestines, this can lead to loose stools and an urgency to defecate. This may produce cramps in the abdominal area. Diarrhea will feel uncomfortable, but the Mayo Clinic indicates it should end without medical help. If it does not, the Clinic recommends seeking medical aid from the prescribing doctor.
Restlessness
Taking Reglan also can cause a temporary feeling of restlessness in the person when treatment begins. The person may feel unable to stay still and relax, and may feel a need to move or do something, anything, that may not be warranted. The Mayo Clinic states this side effect, too, should pass as the person adjusts to the medication.
Drowsiness and Insomnia
Another non-serious side effect that occurs commonly at the start of Reglan treatment is drowsiness. The drug may cause the person to feel sleepy during normal waking hours. This, too, should abate on its own. Drugs.com states the opposite side effect may occur during the initiation of treatment, meaning the person may have difficulties sleeping. Like drowsiness, insomnia should stop without treatment.
Dizziness and Nausea
Like many other kinds of medicines, Reglan can cause initial imbalances in the person’s body system that, in general, will go away after the adjustment period. This drug can make the person feel as if he spins or whirls when no movement takes place. The person also may feel sick to his stomach.
