Things to Do in San Felipe

San Felipe is located on the west coast of Mexico along the Sea of Cortez, 125 miles south of the Mexican border crossing in Baja, California. San Felipe is renowned for its low-tide beaches, resort style communities, fine dining and recreational activities. In addition, 75-degree temperature year round makes it a popular destination for vacationers and retirees.

Beaches

There are 50 miles of calm, low-tide beaches in San Felipe. Beaches to the south of the city are popular, while beaches to the north are isolated and offer privacy. All beaches accommodate sailing, windsurfing and other personal water crafts. Boats can be launched off official ramps if vacationers wish to travel by water to seaside shopping or dining. Unofficial launch ramps are also available. It is cautioned that vacationers know the tide schedules to avoid getting stranded when tides pull away from shore.

Off Road Opportunities

South of town, there are deserts and off-road dirt trails to explore on dirt bikes and ATVs. North of town, the terrain calls for exploration by dune buggies or sand rail vehicles. Additional locations of interest include the giant cacti valley, natural fresh springs and waterfalls. Also, the annual SCORE International Baja 500 off-road race is held in the San Felipe desert for race fans to enjoy watching.

Lake Bed

Laguna Diablo Dry Lake Bed is northwest of San Felipe. The lake bed is packed hard and cracked, making it a popular location for different activities, such as monster truck racing and motorcycles pulling plastic discs behind them. Anybody wanting to let loose in their car or vehicle is welcome on the lake bed.

Shopping

Shopping in San Felipe is another attraction for vacationers. Clothing shops, craftsmen shops, art galleries and nick-knack stores are abound. One of a kind artwork and pottery are available along with beach souvenirs. No matter what budget vacationers are on, they are sure to find something unique to take home.

Dining

The infamous Fish Taco is said to have been born in San Felipe. The town has a traditional fishing port history that tells of local villagers creating varying flavor-packed versions of the Fish Taco. In honor of its Fish Taco experts, San Felipe made a designated courtyard called Plaza Maristaco (Fish Taco Plaza). Additional savory dishes, including sea bass, shrimp, chicken, pork and beef can be experienced at many of the fine dining restaurants in the city as well.
