It's one thing to run your recent golf scores through the proper formula to calculate a handicap index, but it's not enough to meet U.S. Golf Association requirements for use in formal tournament play. The USGA has specific guidelines on attaining a handicap to build integrity in the handicap system, so you can be sure that a standard applies for everyone in the competition.

Step 1

The USGA defines a golf club as a group with at least 10 members. It does not have to be tied to a particular course. It must include a handicap committee that can review scores and adjust members' handicaps where necessary. It also must apply for USGA licensing to be able to use its handicap system.

Step 2

Play by the rules. Golf is an honorable game in which players follow the rules without an official watching. If you replay shots without penalty, improve your lie or violate other Rules of Golf during your round, you should not submit that score for handicap calculation. It's also required that you post all scores, from every course, so your handicap is a true indication of your ability.

Step 3

Submit your scores. Sign and date your scorecards and clearly indicate the tee you used. Check that the card has the course rating and slope rating for the tee you played. Adjust hole scores according to Equitable Stroke Control, a method that keeps poor hole scores from unduly inflating handicaps. A full handicap can be established with five scores, but the USGA recommends submitting at least your past 20 to provide a true indication.
