Named for the city of Epsom in England, Epsom salts are a naturally formed mineral consisting of hydrated magnesium sulfate crystals. Containing high concentrations of magnesium, sulfur and oxygen, Epsom salts can be ingested, used in the bath, or applied as a poultice to relieve a variety of problems such as pain, inflammation, cramps, indigestion and skin anomalies. An effective way to increase the body's magnesium and sulfate levels, Epsom salts are easily obtained and create no adverse effects when used properly. However, it is important to consult with your health care practitioner before using Epsom salts in any capacity.

Detoxification

Because magnesium is an alkaline substance, its presence in Epsom salts helps to restore healthy pH levels in the body, which is important for rendering acidic toxins inert. Additionally, because of their magnesium and sulfate content, Epsom salts are able to flush toxins out of the system as these two elements assist cells in eliminating wastes. Soaking in a bath with one to two cups of dissolved Epsom salts for 20 minutes can help the body sweat out toxins while relieving aching bones and muscles, and reducing the effects of stress.

Soaking in an Epsom salt bath helps to raise naturally occurring magnesium and sulfate levels in the body. In a study at the University of Birmingham, England's School of Bioscience, volunteers took Epsom salt baths and all but three showed a higher level of magnesium in their plasma over a course of seven days. Those whose levels did not increase already had optimal levels in their blood before the baths, so the body did not need to produce more. Sulfate levels also rose in the subjects, with no adverse effects.

Laxative

Epsom salts, when taken orally, provide laxative action, relieving the symptoms of constipation. They help the body absorb nutrients more efficiently by removing obstructions in the intestinal tract and bowels. Because magnesium helps to regulate enzymes, which govern energy levels, muscle control, and the function of electrolytes in the body, the increased dose of this mineral is another health benefit. Dr Robert O. Young, a research scientist at The pH Miracle Living Center, says Epsom salts are fast-acting, helping to detoxify the bowels and liver generally within one hour of ingestion.

Joint and Muscle Health

Used as a poultice, Epsom salts are easily absorbed through the skin and are beneficial in treating pain and inflammation. A moist poultice can also ease the pain of migraine headaches, as the calming action of magnesium helps to reduce stress. The presence of sulfates also helps to create more protein for joint and brain tissue health.

Softening and Healing Skin

Because Epsom salts have antiseptic value, using a poultice on boils, carbuncles and similar problems can assist in the healing process. According to the online site Acne Treatment Guru, Epsom salts can be especially effective in treating acne because of their antiseptic and alkaline qualities. Used as a body scrub, the salts create more circulation, increasing blood flow to a given area, which helps to prevent blood clotting and heal wounds.
