Ramps come in all different shapes and sizes and you can use them in different combinations to perform more radical tricks. Smaller, less vertical ramps are easier for beginners to learn on. Larger ramps are steeper, giving you more speed, and are good for a rider with more experience. Vertical height, or vert, increases the difficulty level of the ramp. The more vert the ramp has, the more critical the drop is, making the ramp a higher level of difficulty.

Halfpipe

A halfpipe is two ramps facing each other connected by a flat deck at the bottom. Most halfpipe ramps have rails at the top, which are perfect for grinding and fakie tricks. The taller the ramp, the more distance you will need between the peaks; if the ramps are too close it will be too fast to ride. Halfpipes come in many different sizes; 4 to 6 feet is most common with a small amount of vertical drop. If you have more experience, you will want to use a larger half pipe; 6 feet with a 2- to 3-foot vertical drop. Monster ramps are 10 feet and taller with roll-ins. Roll-ins are a sloping transition from the top of the ramp to the center, giving you the ability to roll in instead of dropping in.

Pyramid Ramp

The pyramid ramp is a four-sided ramp rising up to a flat deck in the center. There are many variations, from eight-sided with rails through the center to pyramids with no flat transitions on the top. You can use pyramid ramps for learning basic tricks as well as combining complicated maneuvers.

Quarterpipe

The quarterpipe ramp is one-half of a halfpipe and is typically smaller and less vertical. Quarterpipes are perfect for practicing basic tricks, kick turns, stalls, slides, drop-ins and grinds. They are also easy to move, giving them the ability to be put in combination with rails, boxes and other transition ramps.

Wedge and Launch Ramps

Wedge ramps have a gradual incline and are excellent for generating slower speeds for basic tricks, slides, kick turns, hard flip tricks and doing small airs. Launch ramps are used to get the rider in the air to clear obstacles and practice air flip tricks.

Transition Ramp

A transition ramp is two types or ramps meeting in the center. An example of this would be a launch ramp meeting a wedge ramp with a flat top in the middle. Another combination would be a quarterpipe meeting a launch ramp. Transition ramps are perfect for mixing up air and land tricks.
