The town of North Conway, New Hampshire is nestled in the heart of New Hampshire's White Mountains region. The areas numerous peaks and sprawling surrounding wilderness are home to some of New England's best hiking. From foliage hikes to wintry excursions, North Conway offers trails for trekkers of all ages and abilities.
When to Go
While the North Conway region is beautiful year round, the best time to hike is in the fall. The area's fall foliage is breathtaking, but the cooler temperatures also make for more comfortable hiking as layers of clothing can be removed or added according to the weather.
Mount Chocorua
Located just minutes from North Conway, Mount Chocorua is one of the most hiked places in all of New England. The mountain offers slowly ascending trails for climbers of all ages and skill levels. The mountain's many summits reveal sprawling views of the Presidential Mountain Range.
Kearsage North
The Kearsage North trail head is also located in close proximity to the village. The trail leads up the mountain to where an abandoned fire tower is located, offering hikers broader views above the tree line. Although no longer operable, the tower is listed in the the National Historic Fire Lookout Register.
Echo Lake
Climbers can conclude hikes of Echo Lake State park with a swim in the lake's cool waters. The park's 118 acres features smooth beginner trails as well as more advanced treks for bouldering. The ascent up Cathedral Ledge, also located in the park, includes rock and ice climbing locations.
Considerations
Hiking in the North Conway region can be dangerous given the remote nature of its many trails. Even casual day hikers are encouraged to hike in groups and supply themselves with a map of the area they intend to explore before heading out.
