Touch Football Fitness Drills

Many observers consider touch football a friendly game--one that youngsters who are just learning to play enjoy. However, the game can become extremely competitive, and some of the plays can be fairly complex. Some intramural touch football leagues feature players who are top athletes. Getting ready for touch football season involves practice and conditioning.

Labor Crunch

Building your core muscles will help you prepare for touch football season. Having stronger core muscles aids quickness, speed and agility. For the labor crunch, lie flat on the floor and bring your feet as close to your butt as possible while spreading your knees. This position is similar to the way a woman looks when delivering a baby, and that's how it gets the name. Extend your arms so they are pointing between your legs. Lift your head, neck and shoulders about 10 to 12 inches while you tense your abs. Repeat 25 times, take a 30-second break and then repeat the set.

Shuttle Run

For the shuttle run, start at the goal line, and sprint to the 15-yard line. Pick up the football sitting on that line. Sprint back to the goal line, and place the football on the ground. Sprint to the 20-yard line, and pick up the football sitting there. Sprint back to the goal line, and drop it. Take a 30-second break, and repeat the shuttle run.

Square Out and Leap

The square out and leap drill will help any touch football player prepare to run a tight pass pattern, go up high for a ball and then come down inbounds. It workd on leg strength, leaping ability and hand-eye coordination. Start off at the line of scrimmage and sprint 15 yards. then cut hard to the right, and run a square-out pattern by heading for the sidelines. As you approach the sidelines, the quarterback will throw you a pass that is about 2 feet over your head. You must go up for the ball, catch it, and keep your toes inbounds when you land. Do this drill five times, take a one-minute break, and then repeat the set.
