Over time, the grips on your golf clubs begin to wear down. After months or years of use, and thousands of swings, they just aren't the same as when they were new. Worn golf grips can have an adverse effect on your game. Your hands may begin to slip, and you may lose your feel around the greens. Replacing your grips will help with control, and make your clubs look new again.
Step 1
Place your golf club into a vise and tighten until snug. Fit your vise with rubber clamps beforehand to avoid scratching your club.
Step 2
Cut down the middle of the club's grip with a utility knife. Try to cut only three-quarters of the way through the rubber so you won't damage the club.
Step 3
Clean the top of the golf shaft thoroughly to remove the old grip tape. Use a towel soaked in solvent and your utility knife to peel off any stubborn pieces of tape.
Step 4
Apply new grip tape once the shaft is clean and dry. You can apply it in strips or in a spiral around the top of the club. Do not overlap the tape too thickly. Avoid bumps or creases in the tape. Leave about a half-inch of tape at the top to fold over and create a sea,l so no water can get down the shaft.
Step 5
Prepare the grip you will apply the club. Cover the small hole at the top of the grip with your thumb, and pour a small amount of solvent into the open end. Cover that end with your other hand, and shake the solvent all through the grip.
Step 6
Place a bowl underneath your vise, and pour the solvent from inside the new grip onto the new grip tape on your golf club.
Step 7
Install your new golf grip. Slide it on the shaft and push down from the top as quickly as you can. You have a few minutes to get the grip on properly.
Step 8
Clean the grip and club shaft off when it looks good, and leave it to dry.
