Perricone MD Neuropeptide Deep Wrinkle Serum is marketed to consumers who want to smooth out wrinkles and lines from the face and neck. It boasts a Botox-like effect and has four different peptides for sagging skin. It has no fillers or paraben preservatives. Other than water, there are 19 ingredients.

Skin Conditioning Agents

Skin conditioning agents are those that help in hydrating, moisturizing, and keeping the skin healthy looking. There are seven skin conditioning agents in this Perricone MD product; phosphatidylcholine, caprylyl glycol, dipeptide-2, acetyl tetrapeptide-5, pentapeptide-3, acetyl hexapeptide-8 and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7. The peptides are what give the product its name, while caprylyl glycol can also work as an emollient and humectant, according to Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep online cosmetic database.

Masking Agent

There is a masking agent in the ingredient list for this serum, Rosa damascena flower oil, which works like a fragrance, according to Skin Deep.

Preservatives

While the marketing touts no paraben preservatives there are two preservatives that are not of the paraben variety. These preservatives are sorbic acid and phenoxyethanol. Sorbic acid retards yeast growth in a product, according to the website DERMAdoctor, phenxoyethanol prevents other microbial growth, according to the Cosmetics Info website.

Solvents

Solvents help ingredients combine by helping them break down into solutions. There are two ingredients working as solvents in this wrinkle serum; polysorbate 20 and ethoxydiglycol. The Cosmetics Info website states that polysorbate 20 can also be an emulsifier by reducing the surface tension of the product and ethoxydiglycol can also be a viscosity decreasing agent making the product thinner.

Emulsifiers and Emulsion Stabilizers

Emulsifiers help ingredients combine together while emulsion stabilizers help keep that emulsion stable without breaking down. Steareth-20 is the emulsifier in this formula, states Cosmetics Info, while cellulose gum is the emulsion stabilizer.

Exfoliant

Exfoliants help remove dead skin cells from the skin’s surface. Glycolic acid works as the exfoliant agent in this serum and it is able to resolved dry skin, according to DERMAdoctor.

Antioxidant

Ascorbyl Glucoside is the antioxidant in this formula, helping to fight free radical damage on the surface of the skin, according to Skin Deep.

Hydrator

Hydrators help keep skin and hair hydrated, pulling moisture into the surface. It lets the serum glide smoothly as well. Glycerin is the hydrator in this formula, according to DERMAdoctor.

Hesperidin Methyl Chalcone

Hesperidin methyl chalcone is added to remove undereye circles and improve appearance. While there are studies that support it as a vein problem treatment when taken internally, there are none that substantiate it for topical use, according to Cosmetics Cop.

DMAE

DMAE is usually studied as an oral supplement, but there is mixed results about its use on skin. It may have the ability to tighten skin and be an anti-inflammatory, but more studies are needed, according to Cosmetics Cop.
