Washing your face may seem as simple as grabbing a washcloth and a bar of soap but proper facial cleansing is slightly more complicated. Take a few minutes and wash your face the right way, as proper care and cleansing will help to ensure that your skin remains vibrant and healthy for many years. Be gentle and don't overdo, as excessive washing can irritate the skin as it strips away healthy oils, says HealthGuidance.org.

Step 1

Wash your hands before cleansing your face so that dirt or oil won't be passed on to your face. Remove any makeup before you wash your face.

Step 2

Wash your face daily with a washcloth and lukewarm water. Avoid hot water. If you have oily skin, you may need to wash your face two or three times every day, notes Princeton University's Health Promotion and Wellness Service.

Step 3

Massage the cleanser into your skin using gentle circular motions. Rinse the cleanser from your face by splashing your face with lukewarm water. Pat your face dry with a soft towel.

Tips and Warnings

  • Choose the best cleanser for your skin type. Use synthetic soap if you find that regular soap irritates your skin. According to Dr. Ken Arndt of Harvard Medical School, while regular soap is fine for many people, synthetic soap is closer to the skin's natural pH. Look for soaps or cleansers labeled "soap free." Use facial "scrubs" or cleansers with exfoliants carefully, says Dr. Arndt, as exfoliants can irritate the skin.
