According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, body mass index or BMI is a screening tool used to estimate body fat based on an individual's height and weight. A BMI between 18.5 to 24.9 is considered healthy, while a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is overweight and a BMI over 30 indicates obesity. The only way to lower your body mass index is to lose weight. Keep in mind however, that BMI is only one indicator of health. Seek professional advice from your physician before you attempt to shed pounds.
Lower BMI
Step 1
Calculate your BMI. Multiply your weight in pounds times 703. Then divide by your height in inches squared. If you are using the metric system, divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared.
Step 2
Use a BMI chart to determine a healthy score for your height.
Step 3
Ask your physician to help you develop a diet and exercise plan that will be customized to fit your particular health issues.
Step 4
Implement your diet and exercise plan. Work with your physician to monitor your weight loss.
Step 5
Every month, recalculate your BMI to determine your progress.
