Cellulite. That bumpy skin that causes women to cover their legs with jeans rather than shorts, is not a welcome development. A woman’s genetic background can dispose her to the development of cellulite, especially if she does not exercise and if she eats too many carbohydrates and too much fat, according to Medical News Today. Hormones can also play a role in cellulite’s development. Thyroid hormones, insulin, prolactin, noradrenaline and estrogen also contribute.

Step 1

Reduce your calorie and fat intake so you can lose excess weight, says the Mayo Clinic. Cellulite is the description used for deposits of fat just under the skin’s surface, says Medical News Today. Because it is an accumulation of fat, reducing your food intake is the most reliable way of reducing the appearance of cellulite.

Step 2

Change the style of underwear you use. Underpants with light elastic that rests under your buttocks and goes around the tops of your thighs limits blood flow. This may contribute to cellulite deposits, according to Medical News Today. Wear thong underwear and boy-cut panties.

Step 3

Increase your level of exercise. If you have a sedentary lifestyle and your job doesn’t involve very much movement, this contributes to the development of cellulite deposits, according to Medical News Today.

Tips and Warnings

  • Radiofrequency systems and lasers are among the most promising treatments, writes the Mayo Clinic. The radiofrequency systems uses a combination of negative tissue massage, infrared light and radiofrequency to treat cellulite, with improvements visible after several twice-weekly treatments. The laser system combines the power of diode laser energy with tissue massage. Effects of both treatments can last up to six months, according to the Mayo Clinic.
  • Lipsouction, a surgical procedure involving removal of fat cells via a narrow tube, only shapes the body. It doesn’t remove cellulite and can make these fat deposits look worse, says the Mayo Clinic.
