A visit to the doctor’s office invariably involves a blood pressure reading. Blood pressure is an integral and easily measured component of the health of the heart and blood vessels.
Definition
Blood pressure refers to the force of blood flowing through the arteries. The contracting force of the heart and the elasticity and diameter of the blood vessels determine blood pressure.
Measurement
Blood pressure readings measure the force of the blood when the heart contracts and the force when the heart relaxes between beats. The two measurements are called the systolic and diastolic pressure, respectively. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury, abbreviated mm Hg. Measurements are expressed as systolic over diastolic, for example, 120 over 80.
Normal
According to MayoClinic.com, although a “normal” blood pressure reading is less than 120 mm Hg systolic and less than 80mm Hg diastolic, some doctors recommend maintaining 115 over 75 for better health.
Abnormal
MayoClinic.com says high blood pressure, or hypertension, occurs when blood pressure exceeds 140 over 90. Hypotension, or low blood pressure, occurs when blood pressure falls below 90 over 60.
Consequences
Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to heart attacks. Low blood pressure can cause dizziness or shock.
