Flying with a newborn, especially for the first time, can be a stressful and overwhelming experience for many parents. Babies can fly as early as 2 weeks of age in most cases, Dr. Shari Nethersole, MD of FamilyEducation.com notes. With a little preparation and organization, you can remove the stress of flying and have a positive experience for both you and the baby.
Step 1
Purchase a seat for the baby on the plane to allow for car seat installation. Airlines allow babies to ride on their parents laps, though the Mayo Clinic explains that a car seat is the safest place for a newborn to ride. Make sure that your car seat is approved for air travel prior to the trip. Most car seats are approved for use on airplanes, double check the owner’s manual to be sure. If the flight is not full, you may be able to install your car seat in an empty seat for no additional charge. Inquire about availability when you check in for your flight.
Step 2
Pack a carry-on diaper bag including enough diapers, wipes, clothing changes, blankets and formula if needed for the entire flight. Expressed breast milk and premixed formula are allowed onboard most planes even though limitations exist on other liquids. Organize the diaper bag so that finding items will be easy if you happen to have a fussy baby and only one free hand.
Step 3
Feed the baby, or offer a pacifier during takeoff and landing to relieve the pressure in the baby’s ears. If you’ve purchased a seat for your newborn, get permission from the flight crew to hold the baby during these times if the baby is breastfed.
Step 4
Walk with the baby in the aisles of the plane if the baby becomes fussy. Bouncing motions and movement can often help soothe a baby. Always wait until after the pilot removes the fasten seatbelt sign before getting up.
Tips and Warnings
- If your baby has any medical conditions, consult with your doctor prior to making trip arrangements. This is especially important for premature babies and babies who experienced complications at delivery.
