Overview

A variety of wrinkle-removing procedures are available, and which one will work for you depends on your type of skin and the nature of your wrinkles. No one treatment is right for everyone. Each age group has different wrinkle concerns and various procedures can help minimize or reduce wrinkles. Dermatologists use a variety of procedures to treat winkles such as injectables, laser treatments and face-lifts. These can be used singly or combined for results that are more dramatic.

Injectable Treatments

Injectable treatments for wrinkles include onabotulinumtoxinA, marketed as Botox, and facial fillers. Botox relaxes the muscles around the eyes to prevent new wrinkles from forming. It also gets rid of frown lines that form between the eyes on the forehead. A doctor injects Boxtox into the muscles to relax them; the procedure is done in a doctor’s office with no down time. The most common side effect is redness and maybe a slight bruising, according to the Academy of Dermatology.

Collagen injections remedy deep wrinkles and folds, reports the Mayo Clinic. A doctors injects collagen around the nose, lips and other parts of your face to plump the skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

Laser Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing uses intense pulsed light, also called IPL. It can be costly, but it is an effective wrinkle-removal procedure. IPL lasers use multiple wavelengths of light and do not destroy the surface layer of the skin. They work underneath the skin surface to reduce wrinkles and improve tone and texture of the skin, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. They also stimulate collagen production in the skin. This procedure is done in a dermatologist’s office, and the patient can return to work immediately.

Ablative lasers, like the CO2 and YAG lasers, destroy the surface layer of skin to remove fine lines and deep wrinkles. They also stimulate collagen production. This procedure is for deeper wrinkles, brown spots and scarred skin. It is done in a doctor’s office. This is a painful procedure and the patient’s face is numbed before resurfacing. The face may swell, and it can take up to several months to heal, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Face-Lift

Getting a face-lift is the most effective way of reducing wrinkling and skin folds caused by sagging skin, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Face-lifts are the most expensive of the wrinkle treatments, but the effects are the most dramatic and can last for up to 10 years. Face-lifts can be combined with Botox, chemical peels and collagen injections to maximize the wrinkle-reducing effects.

Face-lifts are done in a hospital or surgery suite in a dermatologist’s office. The patient is under anesthesia during the procedure. It can take several months for the face to heal after surgery. This is a more aggressive procedure that results in bruising and swelling after surgery.
