Hair growth can be broken down into three phases. The anagen phase refers to active hair growth that lasts from two to six years. During the catagen phase, the hair starts to die and prepares to fall out of the hair follicle. Lastly, during the telogen phase the dead hair falls from its follicle as new hair starts to grow. These phases do not occur to all strands at one time. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, only 10 percent of your hair is in the catagen phase at one time, leaving the other 90 percent actively growing. Boosting hair growth may be possible should you suspect that your hair is not growing at the normal rate.
Step 1
Eat foods rich in vitamins A, B, C and E as well as zinc and iron. According to CareFair.com, foods such as fish, beans, raisins, spinach and yogurt are excellent sources of these vitamins and minerals, as well as protein. The vitamins and minerals in these foods support hair growth and health.
Step 2
Trim your hair every other month to remove split ends. Split ends can cause further damage if not removed regularly. According to Daily Glow website, failure to remove split ends will cause hair to break or split further, leaving it looking as if it hasn't grown at all.
Step 3
Massage your scalp two to three minutes per day, preferably when washing your hair. Massaging your scalp increases blood circulation, which in turn stimulates hair follicles, according to CareFair.com. Simply rub your fingertips on your scalp in a circular motion for an effective scalp massage.
Step 4
Sleep at least 7 hours per night and allow daily relaxation and exercise to reduce stress. According to CareFair.com, limited sleep and everyday stress teamed with inactivity has been shown to slow hair growth.
Step 5
Allow hair to air dry after washing. Heat styling weakens the hair shaft, causing ends to split and break. Chemical processing such as dyes, relaxers and perms should also be avoided, according to Daily Glow.
