Remedies for Scarring

Scarring can be caused for a number of reasons, including acne, burns, cuts and abrasions. Scarring on the skin can cause self-esteem problems if the scar is very visible to others. However, there are some remedies that you may be able to successfully try at home to minimize scarring on the skin. Remember that herbal remedies should always be used under the supervision of a physician.

Calendula

Calendula is an herbal remedy taken from the marigold plant. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, calendula can be used to decrease scar formation in burn patients. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends that calendula be taken in a tea or tincture by taking ½ to 1 tsp of calendula in ¼ cup of water. The University of Maryland Medical Center also recommends that you test this mixture on your skin before taking it internally to be sure that you are not going to have an allergic reaction. Ask your doctor if it is OK for you to ingest calendula.

Frankincense

Frankincense essential oil has been used for centuries by cultures including the ancient Egyptians as a beauty aide. According to Organic Facts, frankincense oil is a natural cicatrisant because it helps to fade scars caused by acne, boils or even chicken pox. Frankincense essential oil can be applied nightly to the scar and rubbed into the site. After a few weeks, you should notice a difference in the appearance of the scar.

Galbanum

Galbanum has been used for thousands of years and has a number of different benefits, including treating scarring. According to Organic Facts, galbanum essential oil can be used to diminish scars on the skin. Organic Facts reports that it helps to speed up tissue and cell development around the site of the scar, and this helps the skin look new and youthful. This remedy can be applied to the scar on a nightly basis and a difference in the appearance of the scar is usually noticed in a few weeks of use.
