How to Hang a Pull Up Bar

Pull ups are a deceptively simple exercise that works the arms, shoulders, back and abdomen. Installing a pull-up bar allows you to do this exercise anytime in your home. If you put install the bar in a location where you'll see it often, such as in a bathroom or bedroom doorway, you may be inspired to exercise more often. You can install a pull up bar that hangs from the ceiling, or attaches to a wall or doorway.

Step 1

Use a stud finder to locate wall studs or ceiling joists to which you can attach your pull up bar. You must fasten your pull up bar to a structure that will support twice your weight. If you try to install the bar in sheetrock or wall board it will pull out, resulting in injury to you and to the wall or ceiling. This step isn't necessary if you plan to install your pull up bar in a doorway, in which case the wood frame of the door will provide the necessary support.

Step 2

Measure the distance between the screw holes on the supports on your pull up bar. Mark the location of these holes on the doorframe, wall or ceiling where you will be installing the bar.

Step 3

Drill pilot holes for the screws that will attach the pull up bar. Choose a drill bit slightly smaller than the diameter of your screws.

Step 4

Slip the washer onto the screw. Fit the screw into the correct hole in the pull up bar and use electric driver to drive the screw into the hole. Install the other screws the same way. Avoid driving the screws in too far or you'll risk stripping the screws. Stop the drill driver when the head of the screw is flush with the surface of the pull up bar.
