Growing long hair is not as hard as you might think, though many factors can work against you if you are not aware of them. It’s not enough to just avoid cutting your hair. In fact, even that can foil your plans because hair that is not trimmed regularly can split and break. Long, healthy hair requires a little extra care, but long hair remedies don’t have to cost a fortune.
Moisturizing Remedies
The drier and more brittle your hair is, the more it will be prone to frizziness and breakage. Wash your hair only when it needs it, and then only shampoo the scalp with a moisturizing shampoo. Condition the length of your hair, and never rub or wring it dry. Use a hot oil treatment two to four times per month. For an inexpensive and natural moisturizing mask, slather your hair with olive oil or mashed avocado, tuck it all up under a shower cap and leave it for at least an hour, or even overnight if you can sleep with the shower cap on.
Styling Remedies
The proper tools go a long way toward helping avoid damage and breakage. Use a wide-toothed comb to gently de-tangle wet hair. Never brush wet hair, and use a brush that has widely spaced, natural bristles on dry hair. Hair elastics should be coated, and free of metal clips that can snag and break your hair. Make sure that your blow dryer has variable settings, and always use the lowest heat. Avoid hair products such as straighteners and permanent hair color.
Nourishing Remedies
One of the best ways to help hair grow strong and long is to eat a healthy diet. A balanced diet high in lean meats, poultry, fish, nuts and dark green vegetables is necessary to keep your body working properly. According to MayoClinic.com, “Having inadequate protein or iron in your diet or poor nourishment in other ways can cause you to experience hair loss.” Staying hydrated is also important, so drink between 32 and 64 oz. of water every day.
Protective Remedies
Braid your hair at night, as soon as it is long enough. This helps reduce friction breakage and frizz caused when you move around in your sleep. Wear a hat in harsh sunshine. Apply a leave-in conditioner before going swimming. Rinse and re-condition your hair as soon as you are done swimming for the day.
