Both men and women play field hockey, which is a popular international sport. Although basic equipment is the same for both men’s and women’s field hockey, women need items that fit their height and body type. For example, the field hockey stick can vary in length, weight and shape, depending on the player’s height, strength and position on the team. Protective gear such as mouth guards, shin guards and goalie equipment are also available in sizes that fit female players.

Step 1

Determine the proper length for your field hockey stick. Measure from the floor to the top of your hipbone, and select a stick that is about 1 inch shorter than that distance.

Step 2

Choose the ideal weight for your field hockey stick, based on the position you play as well as your comfort level when holding and moving the stick. Field hockey sticks come in a variety of weights from 18 ounces to 25.9 ounces. Defensive players usually use heavier sticks, while lighter sticks provide the quick maneuvering offensive players need.

Step 3

Select a mouth guard; you can choose from several adult sizes and colors.

Step 4

Purchase shin guards, which come in plastic, foam or fiberglass. Shin guards come in standard sizes, or you can have them custom-made to fit your legs.

Step 5

Select goalkeeper equipment. Goalkeepers should wear extra protective equipment, including a helmet and women’s pelvic protector, which come in conventional hat and waist sizes, respectively. You also need to buy gloves, a chest protector, a throat protector and leg guards, all of which come in standard youth and adult sizes.
