Running the Coast
There is no shortage of running trails within the city of San Francisco. One of the best running routes is along the California coastline at Great Highway. Just under ten miles from San Francisco's downtown is Italian-inspired Sausalito. The waterfront village prides itself on its gourmet restaurants, shops and art galleries. To explore Sausalito in a leisurely way, rent a bicycle at the start of the Golden Gate Bridge and head eight miles into the town. The average rental cost is just under $30 for day-long use of a bicycle. When you get into Sausalito, there are many free bike lots for parking your wheels as you dine and shop.
Visit the Ferry Building
During your visit to San Francisco, a trip to the city's Ferry Building Marketplace is not to be missed. Adjacent to the Bay Bridge along Market Street, the Ferry Building has been a part of of San Francisco's architectural framework for more than a century. Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays boast one of the most popular farmer's markets in the nation. An array of fresh seasonal produce and local organic products abounds, and products are available for purchase directly from those who farmed them.
Kayak at Half Moon Bay
Just a short drive from San Francisco is Half Moon Bay. The waterfront community is located along Northern California's coastline, and best traveled to by boat. Visitors looking for an outdoor adventure can rent a kayak and spend the day within its marine environment. In addition to regular aquatic life, kayakers may observe sea lions, seals and other birds indigenous to the Pillar Point Harbor. This community can be a true travel adventure for those with a paddle and life vest in hand.
Surf in Santa Cruz
Water sports are tremendously popular in and around the City by the Bay. While you're visiting San Francisco, be sure to take a surfing lesson in nearby Santa Cruz. Surfing originated in the region in the early 1930s, and has remained a sporting tradition for locals and visitors along Monterey Bay. Lessons are offered through local surf shops and will educate students in beginner moves, such as standing up on a board, and overall surf etiquette.
