Many factors work toward the development of a dry, white, flaky scalp. For some, it is the air from indoor heat in winter months, for others, there may be a medical explanation. Treatments vary, but some basic approaches may help hydrate the area and eliminate the itch, helping to heal your scalp.

Step 1

Shampoo with a product designed to treat a dry scalp. This does not necessarily mean a dandruff shampoo. Products are available with formulas especially for dry scalp. The website Short Hair Style recommends products that utilize hemp. Hemp products use oil from the hemp seed, which contains essential fatty acids that may help heal white, dry patches.

Step 2

Cut back on shampooing. Shampooing too frequently strips the scalp of natural oils produced by the body. Reducing shampoo use may help retain those oils and take care of the problem. Instead of shampooing daily, consider using just the conditioner between shampoos. This will help moisturize and still wet your hair for styling.

Step 3

Massage your scalp several times a day. Place your fingertips on the top of your head and press through the hair until you feel the scalp. Rub your fingers along the entire area to loosen dead skin and promote blood flow. Massaging the scalp releases oils onto the skin to hydrate the area.

Step 4

Let your hair air dry when possible. Overuse of hair dryers and curling irons increases the heat on the area and dries out the skin. Cutting back on heat styling may help heal the area.

Step 5

Apply an oil treatment to the scalp and hair. The treatment can be a commercial product or even olive oil. Put a small amount of olive oil on your fingertips. Do not use too much, 1/2 tsp. or less should do the trick. Use enough to cover the skin without saturating the hair. Rub oil into the scalp and wrap a towel around the head to secure your hair. Leave the oil in for 30 minutes, then use a mild shampoo to remove it.

Step 6

If conditions persist after basic treatment, seek medical advice. What may appear like dry scalp could actually be a medical condition, such as psoriasis. Your scalp consists of skin cells. Any illness or condition of the skin can also appear on your scalp. A proper diagnosis from a dermatologist may be the start of treatment and healing.
