Diovan HCT is a combination drug which contains Diovan and hydrochlorothiazide. Diovan is a medication in a class of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It works to control hypertension, also known as high blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic medication which works by helping the body get rid of excess fluid to lower blood pressure. Diovan HCT is available by precription only. There are some side effects associated with Diovan HCT that patients should be aware of.

Headache and Dizziness

Diovan HCT may cause headache and dizziness. These side effects may be temporary and diminish over time as the body adjusts to Diovan HCT. Patients should use caution while driving or operating dangerous machinery until they know how this medication may affect them. Headache and dizziness can also be symptoms of low blood pressure. Low blood pressure is most likely to occur if a patient is on a low salt diet, receiving dialysis, has heart problems, gets sick with vomiting or diarrhea, or drinks alcohol, reports PDRHealth.com. Patients taking Diovan HCT should learn how to monitor their blood pressure at home and when to contact their physician.

Abdominal Discomfort

Diovan HCT may cause abdominal discomfort. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, nausea and diarrhea, says Drugs.com. Taking this medication with food or before bedtime may help to decrease abdominal discomfort. It is important to take Diovan HCT at the same time every day to receive the full benefit of this medication. Eating a bland diet and avoiding spicy or fatty foods may help diminish nausea and vomiting. Severe abdominal discomfort should be reported to a physician for further evaluation.

Joint Pain and Fatigue

Patients taking Diovan HCT may experience joint pain and fatigue. These side effects may lessen over time as the body adjusts to Diovan HCT. If joint pain becomes bothersome a physician should be notified. He may recommend the use of an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen for the relief of occasional joint pain and discomfort.

Cough

Patients may experience cough while taking this medication. Sleeping with humidified air and using throat lozenges may help lessen cough. A cough that is accompanied by fever, shortness of breath, severe fatigue and yellow or green-tinged sputum can be a sign of a bacterial infection which may require further treatment.
