Stress balls are soft balls, usually 1 to 3 inches in diameter, that are covered with flexible cloth or rubber and are stuffed with small pellets, gel, foam or sand. People use stress balls by squeezing them repeatedly in an attempt to relieve stress or tension, strengthen their grip and exercise weak or injured muscles. There is no scientific evidence that stress balls are a medical cure or treatment for stress.
Finger Exercises
Pinch the stress ball between the thumb and one finger, alternating between all four fingers. Hold each pinch for two to five seconds. Place the tips of all five fingers around the ball and squeeze. Hold the squeeze for five to seven seconds and release. Repeat each exercise 5 to 10 times with each hand.
One-Hand Exercises
Place the stress ball in the palm of your hand, wrap your fingers around it and squeeze. Hold the squeeze for five to seven seconds and release. Place the stress ball on a hard surface, place the palm of your hand over the ball, and roll the ball against the table in a circular motion. Repeat each exercise 5 to 10 times with each hand.
Two-Hand Exercises
Grab the bottom of the stress ball with one hand and grab the top with the other hand. Use the hand on top to twist the top of the stress ball, like opening a jar. Repeat using the other hand on top. Grab each side of the stress ball, squeeze and pull the ends away from each other. Repeat five to seven times.
