Scalp massages are popular for their relaxing and calming effect. They stimulate blood flow in the scalp, which promotes hair growth by providing more nutrients to the hair follicles, and they help relieve headaches, stress and sinus congestion. You can enjoy a scalp massage during a shampoo at your hair salon or during spa treatments, or you can give yourself a relaxing scalp massage at home.

Massage Technique

Use your fingers to steady your hand while you give someone a scalp massage or you give yourself a massage. Place your thumbs on your temples and use your first two fingers to massage small circles along the hairline. When giving someone else a massage, steady your hand with your forefingers and use the thumbs to massage. During your massage, move from the hairline to the center of the scalp. Massage the back of the neck and around the ears while giving a scalp massage.

Finding Time for a Scalp Massage

Give yourself a three- to five-minute scalp massage while you shampoo your hair. You can also massage your scalp while you watch television. Finding time to enjoy 10 minutes of scalp massage a day can increase your relaxation and stimulate your hair follicles.

Massage Oil

Choose a massage oil that treats a specific problem you might have, like split ends or thinning hair. Medic 8 recommends lavender, rosemary and coconut oil to help thinning hair and lavender, sesame and almond oil to help split ends. You may also choose a scented oil for simple relaxation. Pour the oil into a small dish and warm the oil by putting the dish in warm water. Use your fingers to dab oil all over your scalp before you massage. After your scalp massage, leave the oil in for 30 minutes before washing.
