The loss of your hair can have devastating results on your emotions. You may be in denial, numb, sad or angry. In general, you may mourn the loss of hair as you would any other loss. Hair loss may be genetic or caused by illness or injury. Treating hair loss is possible in some cases and not in others. There have been some advances in regrowing hair in individuals but the problem continues to be researched. It's important to feel good about yourself, however, with or without hair.

Step 1

Discern the probable cause of your hair loss in order to cope it more readily. It may be immediately evident, for example, if you are undergoing chemotherapy. There may be actions you can take to minimize loss while, in other cases, it may be a problem you must learn to accept.

Step 2

Tell your close friends what is happening to you in regard to your hair loss. They will support you by listening, crying with you and, eventually, laughing along with you. Their physical presence alone will be comforting.

Step 3

Look at some wigs or hairpieces if these appeal to you. Spend some time trying on various styles until you find something flattering and comfortable. Check out different shops, take time to decide and keep your receipt in case you need a refund or exchange. Find out if your insurance plan provides any type of coverage for wigs.

Step 4

Read personal accounts written by others who have lost their hair. These testimonials will speak to you and reveal you are not alone in dealing with this concern. Many people have faced this dilemma with strength and grace that will inspire you.

Step 5

Spend time around others without wearing a wig or other covering. Even though hairpieces, hats and turbans can be comforting it is important to spend some time in public without them. This will increase your self esteem and help you feel good about yourself. Start small by visiting a close friend's house and work up to shopping trips and other crowded environments.

Step 6

Seek professional help to aid you in feeling good about yourself. One-on -counseling with a qualified therapist is one option while finding a support group led by an experienced specialist is another. Stick with it as positive results take time.

Tips and Warnings

  • Keep your sense of humor. Buy a button that says "Bald Chicks Rule" or "Hairless Men Have It Going On." Laugh with your buddies and your family as much as possible. Get all your varying emotions out on paper. Write a diary devoted to this period of life in which you learn to cope with losing your hair.
