Step counters are an efficient way to gauge your exercise efforts. These devices usually have a belt clip or a strap and multiple settings to measure each step you take throughout the day. Some step counters come with clocks, timers, stopwatches or seven days of memory to store your statistics for the week. The best step counters provide accuracy so that you can realize your fitness plan, whether it is walking 6,000 steps per day for better health or walking 10,000 steps a day for weight loss.

Omron HJ-113

The HJ-113 step counter is one of the best tools to track exercise because it has a large liquid crystal display and a clock. It measures aerobic and nonaerobic steps, minutes of exercise, distance and fat burned. It also calculates the number of calories burned during your workout. The HJ-113 has memory for a full week. The counter automatically resets at midnight so you start each day with a clear memory. You can wear the HJ-113 on your belt or put it in a pocket or your purse because of the 2D Smart Sensor Technology. The suggested retail price is $26.50 but you can find them for sale for as low as $20.00.

New Lifestyles NL-2000

The NL-2000 step counter sells for $69.95. It is more expensive than the Omron HJ-113, but it has a piezoelectric strain gauge that counts steps and detects the intensity of each step to find out how many calories you are burning. It also calculates your basal metabolic rate. The NL-2000 has seven days of automatic memory. This counter is good for obese people because it counts steps at slower speeds than traditional step counters worn on the arm. It is also very quiet with no clicking noise.

Garmin Forerunner 205

The Garmin Forerunner 205 combines a global positioning system with a step counter. It sells for $145.94, which is much more expensive than the Omron HJ-113 or the NL-2000. Still, you can track speed, distance and pace data with this GPS device. It can be used for any activity including walking, cycling, cross-country skiing or windsurfing. The Garmin includes software that lets you download your workout data for analysis.
