Excess oil in the hair often causes discomfort and embarrassment. According to TeensHealth, sponsored by Nemours Children's Health System, each individual strand of hair is connected to a sebaceous gland. This plenitude of oil is mostly beneficial, as oil is the substance that keeps hair looking sleek and glossy. Unfortunately, excessively oily hair can be a stubborn problem to solve as the hair can appear dirty and greasy only hours after a shampoo.
Step 1
Wash your hair every day or every other day, advises TeensHealth. Use a shampoo formulated for oily hair. Use only enough shampoo to clean your hair, as excessive shampoo is difficult to rinse out. Scrub gently, as hard rubbing won't help eliminate oil but can irritate the scalp, notes the TeensHealth website. Specialists at University of Maryland Medical Center note that allowing the shampoo to remain in the hair for five minutes can also help to alleviate oily hair.
Step 2
Follow the shampoo with a conditioner for oily hair. Avoid applying conditioner to the roots of your hair, as extra moisture isn't needed in that area, says Seventeen magazine. Apply conditioner halfway down your hair and massage it into the ends.
Step 3
Brush your hair gently, recommends the University of Maryland Medical Center website. Vigorous brushing can transport the oil from the the glands in the scalp to the ends of your hair.
Step 4
Style your hair with lotions and styling gels formulated for oily hair, as such substances can often add unwanted oil to the hair, according to TeensHealth. Look for labels that say, "oil free," or "greaseless." If you don't absolutely need lotions and styling gels, don't use them.
