Sore ears may occur independently or in conjunction with an ear infection. Rarely are sore ears an emergency, but symptoms should nonetheless be treated immediately so they do not escalate. A visit with a doctor or alternative health care practitioner is key in determining the best course of treatment for a particular individual.
Garlic Mullein Drops
Garlic mullein drops may be purchased over the counter, or they can be made at home. Infuse almond or olive oil with mullein and garlic, strain and apply directly to the ear for relief from ear pain. The antiviral and antibacterial properties of the drops also combat ear infection, according to "Mothering" magazine.
Prescription Drops
Prescription eardrops are stronger than garlic mullein drops. They contain an analgesic to help numb the pain. There are several weaker versions of prescription eardrops available over the counter. Renowned pediatrician, Dr. William Sears, advises his patients combine this treatment with ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
Chiropractic Adjustment
Chiropractors correct subluxations, or misalignments, in the skull, neck and spine. By adjusting vertebrae in these areas, chiropractors theoretically restore the functionality of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, healing a variety of symptoms, including sore ears, in the process. The American Chiropractic Association reports improvements in nearly 80 percent of patients seeking relief from ear infections and ear pain.
CranioSacral Therapy
CranioSacral Therapy is a modality of bodywork that may help relieve sore ears. A licensed craniosacral therapist touches the patient very lightly at appropriate points with her fingers, applying approximately the same amount of pressure as a nickel. This action releases restrictions in the cerebrospinal fluid and allows the nervous system to function at its peak. John Upledger, the physician who invented CST, argues that this heals a variety of conditions, including sore ears and even ear infections.
Lymphatic Drainage Massage
Lymphatic drainage massage frees excess fluid from the ears, which may cause them to be sore. While the procedure initially may be performed by a licensed masseuse, patients can learn the points and technique for themselves. Light pressure on the neck between the collar and jawbones usually resolves ear pain within a period of days.
