How to Grip the Club

Possibly the most important part of taking up the game of golf is learning how to correctly hold the club. However, this is easier said than done as getting the correct grip can be very difficult for some golfers. Many people spend years before they feel comfortable with their grip. Your grip on the club will determine how you set up your swing and how you hit the ball. Making sure you hit the practice the basics of club gripping will allow you to eventually move into the position naturally.

Step 1

Place the club in your left hand so the club shaft runs from just below the first knuckle on your pointer finger to just above the joint of your pinkie. The top of the club shaft should be about 1/2 inch past the bottom of your hand.

Step 2

Wrap the fingers of your left hand around the club shaft and place your thumb slightly to the right of the shaft. You should be able to use your wrist to lift the club up and down.

Step 3

Place your right hand on the club so the thumb of the left hand fits into the meaty part of your right palm. Wrap the fingers of your right hand around the club shaft. Your right thumb should be on the left side of the shaft.

Step 4

Place the club head on the ground next to the ball so the club face is even next to the ball. Your right thumb should be pointing at the ball.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you are left-handed, switch the orientation of your hands with your right hand on top and your left hand wrapped around it.
