Diabetes is a disease that affects the way the body utilizes glucose, or blood sugar. There are several forms of diabetes--type 1, type 2 and gestational--all of which involve having too much glucose in the blood. Type 1 diabetes can only be treat with daily insulin injections to help restore normal blood sugar levels. In some cases, type 2 and gestational diabetes can be managed with diet and lifestyle changes. It is important to consult a health care professional when treating diabetes. Left untreated, diabetes can result in serious health complications.
Treat Diabetes Without Medication
Step 1
Set realistic weight-loss goals. According to the American Diabetes Association, not only does it help with feeling better overall, but a small weight loss can help to lower blood glucose levels, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Step 2
Increase your physical activity level. Thirty minutes of physical activity most days of the week helps to reduce blood sugar levels, aids in weight loss, reduces body fat and decreases stress.
Step 3
Establish a meal routine to aid with glucose control and weight maintenance. Speak with a doctor or dietitian to help you determine how many carbohydrates you require throughout the day, and divide them equally among three meals and three snacks.
Step 4
Be aware of portion sizes. Utilize a diabetic exchange book to determine how many carbohydrates are in foods such as fruits, vegetables, grains, meat and dairy (see Resources).
Step 5
Utilize the Diabetes Food Pyramid to choose which foods are the best for managing your diabetes (see Resources). Choose whole grains, fruits and vegetables for starches. Lean meat, poultry, fish and nuts are good choices for protein, as are low- and non-fat dairy products.
