Wellbutrin SR--meaning sustained-release--is an aminoketone nontraditional antidepressant that is chemically different from traditional antidepressants such as tricyclics, monoamine oxidase inhibitors or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. GlaxoSmithKline, the drug's manufacturer, describes this drug as chemically formulated from the phenylethylamine drug family. Wellbutrin SR is orally administered daily in 100, 150 and 200 mg long acting formulas. This drug is not recommended in standard doses for individuals with impaired hepatic function, and the treating physician will run necessary tests to determine its suitability.

Relief of Depression Symptoms

Wellbutrin SR--also listed under the generic name bupropion--works by increasing the available amount of the brain chemicals norepinephrine and dopamine. These important chemicals are needed for maintenance of mood stability and elevation. This drug has also been tested in clinical trials to reduce cravings in smoking cessation. PsychCentral places extra caution for those taking this drug as a combined therapy with herbal supplements such a ginseng, ma huang, yohimbine and St. John's wort as contraindications have been reported.

Smoking Cessation

Wellbutrin SR is not FDA approved for smoking cessation, yet clinical trials have shown positive results. Doctors will prescribe for offline use when it is viewed as a good pharmacological fit. Generally, the chemical derivative of Wellbutrin--Xyban--is FDA approved for the cessation of smoking. Drug Information Online posits that suicidal ideation has been reported and should be monitored with this drug closely.

Weight Loss

Weight loss is a significant effect of Wellbutrin SR in some individuals. GlaxoSmithKline reports an average appetite reduction of 28 percent and weight loss greater than 5 lbs. among those taking the drug versus a placebo in clinical trials. In comparison with individuals taking tricyclic antidepressants that showed an average weight gain of 35 percent in clinical trials, only 9 percent of Wellbutrin SR users experienced the same. In summary, Wellbutrin SR has anorectic and other weight reducing properties that can lead to significant loss from previous medication gains.
