Skills training is vital to the development of every soccer player. Manipulating a soccer ball with your feet is not something that comes naturally to most people. To be a good soccer player, you need to invest time and energy into practice. Plenty of touches on the ball increase your comfort level and your ability to perform technical skills.

Types

You can do soccer training on your own or as part of a team. Juggling or kicking a ball against a wall repeatedly lets you improve your touch on the ball and develop your skills. Keep-away and passing drills increase your awareness of where and when to pass. You can work on moving the ball in practices with your team.

Benefits

The more time you invest in soccer skills training, the easier the game becomes. Practice first touches so that you can receive passes during a game without losing possession. Work on your turns so you can beat defenders, and practice passing and shooting. Regular practice also improves your overall fitness level, which makes it easier to play all-out during the game. When skills come more naturally to you, you can lift your head while in possession and pick out passing options.

Considerations

Work to develop the ability to use both feet, so that you don't become predictable and easier to defend. For example, a midfield player who can use both feet can beat the defender and cross the ball from both sides of the field. At times the ball comes to you at difficult angles during a soccer game, if you do not have the ability to trap and pass using both feet.

Features

You can use training to work on a specific area of your game. For example, futsal training helps you improve technique and touch on the ball. You play futsal on a small field with a heavier ball. The field size means that you are almost always dealing with defensive pressure when you receive the ball, and the heavy ball forces you to make quality passes.

Expert Insight

Former U.S. national team coach Steve Sampson says that players need daily soccer skills training to reach the elite level of the game. “The best soccer players in the world can perform soccer skills quickly in game situations, under an opponent's pressure. Like other elite athletes, the very best soccer players work on technique daily, fine-tuning their skills, even at the professional level."
