If a permanent tattoo is not for you or you want to visualize how a tattoo will look on your body, temporary tattoos are an option. Temporary tattoos are available in an array of designs and you also have the option of printing your own designs onto special paper made for your home printer. You can remove the temporary tattoo at any time with products such as baby oil or rubbing alcohol. Unlike permanent tattoos, the application process for temporary tattoos is painless and only takes several minutes.

Step 1

Determine where you want to put the temporary tattoo and wash this skin area with soap and water to remove any dirt or natural oil on your skin. Shave the area with a disposable razor while the soap and water are on the skin. Rinse any hair off the skin with water. Dry the skin with a paper towel.

Step 2

Fill a bowl with water. Remove the clear paper from the front of the temporary tattoo. Place the temporary tattoo, with the design side facing your skin, onto your skin. Press your hand onto the temporary tattoo for 30 seconds. Remove your hand.

Step 3

Dip a clean sponge into the bowl of water. Twist the sponge to remove excess water. Pat the backing of the temporary tattoo with the damp sponge. Moisten the backing of the temporary tattoo completely. Wait for 30 to 60 seconds.

Step 4

Peel the backing off the temporary tattoo. Pull one corner of the backing up and away from your skin slowly. Look at the design while pulling. The temporary tattoo should have adhered to your skin. Add more water with the sponge and leave the backing on your skin if parts of the design did not transfer.

Tips and Warnings

  • Allow a friend or family apply the temporary tattoo in hard to reach places such as your back to ensure the tattoo is placed straight. Remove excess glue around the temporary tattoo with a wet cotton swab after removing the backing.
  • Remove the temporary tattoo with baby oil instead of rubbing alcohol if you have sensitive skin to prevent dryness or irritation to your skin. Check for a list of ingredients on the packaging of the temporary tattoo to avoid an allergic reaction.
