Board games designed especially for younger children are a practical way to help kids develop basic word and number skills, and enhance their memory skills. There are several board games for preschoolers that are simple, yet fun to play. Simple board games teach young children skills they need to be successful in school, points out Dr. Penelope Leach, a psychologist and child development expert.

Candy Land

Candy Land is a favorite kids’ classic, especially among children under six years of age. Preschoolers are attracted to the brightly colored cards and game board. This game is a reasonable choice for young children, as they don’t have to know how to read to play. Games like Candy Land teach children rules, as well as how to take turns and share.

Chutes and Ladders

Chutes and Ladders is another classic board game for children ages three and up. The game helps young children recognize numbers and teaches basic counting skills. Children learn to take turns and learn that actions have rewards and consequences.

Clue Jr.

Clue Jr. is a board game for kids ages five and older. The game is for two to six players. It helps children learn the concept of taking turns. No reading ability is required to play the game, but youngsters have the opportunity to use their problem-solving skills. The game is not recommended for small children under three years of age, as there are small parts included that can be a potential choking hazard.

Twister

Twister is a great game for helping younger players fine-tune their motor skills, particularly balance and coordination. Smaller tots also learn to identity colors. This game is a family favorite that kids--both big and small--can play.

Sequence for Kids

Sequence for Kids is a board game for children ages three through six that helps them understand number sequences. Preschoolers can start by identifying the animals on the cards and matching them to the board. The game focuses on matching, memory and visual skills.

Scrabble Junior

Scrabble Junior is a game for children ages five and up. The game is designed to help young children with spelling and reading. This game and other board games help children learn the alphabet.

Zingo

Zingo is a new twist on Bingo designed for preschool and kindergarten kids. The game focuses on matching and letter recognition, both of which are skills that children need for reading.
