Because landing punches is an essential element of mixed martial arts, or MMA, competition, fighters must protect their hands from injury during bouts. To accomplish this, MMA fighters use hand wraps to stabilize their wrists as well as the bones and joints in their hands. Properly applying MMA hand wraps is important for fighters of all skill levels.
Step 1
Spread one hand open with your palm facing you and place the loop at one end of the hand wrap over your thumb.
Step 2
Stretch the wrap across the base of your palm, around the back of the wrist and across your palm to the knuckle on your little finger.
Step 3
Turn your hand over until your palm faces the floor and pull the wrap over your knuckles two or three times.
Step 4
Turn your hand so that your palm once again faces you, then wrap diagonally across your palm all the way down to your wrist.
Step 5
Pull the wrap across the back of your hand to your thumb and wrap your thumb once.
Step 6
Pull the wrap across your palm toward your little finger so that that wrap makes an “X” pattern on your palm.
Step 7
Wrap across your knuckles on the back of your hand to the base of the back of your thumb. Wrap your thumb and continue wrapping around your wrist, palm or knuckles until you reach the end of the wrap.
Step 8
Secure the wrap by connecting the included strip, hook or other adhesive at the end of the wrap to a comfortable location on your wrist or palm.
Tips and Warnings
- Keep the wrap pulled tight at all times when applying it to your hand. A loose wrap is ineffective and could result in injury.
