Carp, considered a coarse fish by some anglers, is actually sought after by others, who appreciate the strong fight of this large and muscular fish. One carp-fishing technique involves a float and is called the lift method. If you plan to release the carp, handle it carefully with a soft net to avoid injuring it or causing it to lose scales.
Step 1
Select a medium-weight spinning rod and reel combo loaded with 20 pound line. Tie a 1/0 or 2/0 hook on the end of your fishing line.
Step 2
Select enough large split shots to hold the fishing float you intend to use underwater. Attach the split shots on the main fishing line approximately 2 to 6 inches from the hook.
Step 3
Attach the bottom of a long and slender float to your main fishing line. Place it far enough up the line so that the weight will hold it just under the surface of the water, with the tip standing straight up out of the water.
Step 4
Bait your hook and cast the line out into the water. Reel the line in until the float is in the proper position.
Step 5
Watch for the float to surface and lie on its side, which indicates that a fish has picked up the bait. As the float starts to move off, take up the slack in your line and set the hook. Play the fish until it tires, then reel it in.
