As you play golf, over time dirt, sweat, hand oils, dead skin and other unwanted materials can build up on your golf club grips, particularly in the grips' grooves. Dirty golf club grips can reduce the amount of control you have over the club. Regularly cleaning your grips can help to create a surface that won't slip under the force of a golf swing, improving control. Cleaning also helps to extend the life of the rubber the grips are made of and let's not overlook the psychological factor of playing with clean grips, which may help improve your golf game.

Step 1

Use a commercial glass and window cleaner for a quick cleaning. Spray the club grip with the product and wipe the grip down with a clean towel.

Step 2

Wash rubber golf club grips in water and dishwashing detergent for a more thorough cleaning. Put a couple of caps of detergent in a bucket of warm water. Apply the water with a brush with soft bristles and the grips lightly until clean. Grasp the grip with a towel and rub the towel up and down the grip to remove the loosened dirt and grime. Rinse the grips thoroughly with clear water and dry completely.

Step 3

Clean synthetic rubber grips with a soft towel soaked with rubbing alcohol. Wipe the grips thoroughly and carefully to avoid scratching the slip-resistant surface. Allow the grips to dry completely.

Step 4

Use a solvent such as white spirits for more stubborn materials on your rubber grips. Soak a towel with the solvent and quickly wipe the grips down. This is particularly effective at removing any adhesives or other grime left over from installing new grips.
