The resting metabolic rate is the minimum rate at which you burn calories while not performing any activity at all, including digestion. You can determine the number of calories you expand in a day via your resting metabolic rate. Men and women have different metabolic rates and therefore use different formulas to calculate their daily calorie expenditure. These calculations require you to provide your weight, height, gender and age.
Step 1
Weigh yourself in pounds with a bathroom scale. Divide your weight by 2.2 to convert it to kilograms.
Step 2
Measure your height in inches with a tape measure. Multiply your height by 2.54 to convert it to centimeters.
Step 3
Calculate your daily calorie expenditure if you’re female with this equation: (Weight x 9.99) + (Height x 6.25) - (Age x 4.92) - 161. This formula requires your weight in kilograms, your height in centimeters and your age in years.
Let your weight be 77kg, let your height be 171cm and let your age be 42 years. You will burn at least (77 x 9.99) + (171 x 6.25) - (42 x 4.92) – 161 = 1,470 calories per day.
Step 4
Compute your daily calorie expenditure if you’re male with this equation: (Weight x 9.99) + (Height x 6.25) - (Age x 4.92) + 5. This formula requires your weight in kilograms, your height in centimeters and your age in years.
Let your weight be 83kg, let your height be 176cm and let your age be 37 years. You will burn at least (83 x 9.99) + (176 x 6.25) - (37 x 4.92) + 5 = 1,752 calories per day.
