Massage is used both for alternative medicine and relaxation purposes. In fact, massage therapy is so popular that the National Health Interview Survey showed that in 2007, 18 million adults across the United States sought out some form of professional massage therapy. As a practitioner of massage, it's important to set a calm and appropriate setting for the therapy session. One of the key ways of doing this is through your music choices.

New Age

New Age music has found a home in many massage clinics and spas across the United States. New Age music is believed to have originate in 1965 with Tony Scott's album Music for Zen Meditation, and has progressed in both style and instrumentation over the years. New Age music tends to have peaceful tones and rhythms that are repetitive and simple, helping create a relaxed atmosphere for your massage client. It's important to pull the most relaxing songs off of multiple albums, as some albums may include more harsh or faster paced music that can interrupt the flow of the massage.

Piano

Solo piano music can also provide a calming atmosphere for a massage therapy session. Hundreds of piano musicians have piano music on the market that may be appropriate for your practice. Solo piano, when chosen properly, provides a rhythmic and soft background that can help induce relaxation. As with other types of music, always pick and choose specific songs that match the atmosphere you are trying to create in your office or spa.

Nature Sounds

Music in the form of tracked nature sounds works for background music during a massage treatment. Nature sounds such as rain, light thunder, birds, and rolling rivers or waterfalls create a peaceful feeling of being outdoors. This can be played for the entire session without interrupting the flow, as some other forms of music can do as it switches between songs of different time signatures or tempos.

Other

There are several artists and companies who make music designed specifically for massage therapy. The types of music can vary on these mixes including styles such as frequencies, overtones, Tibetan chants, ethereal vocals and synthesizers to create an otherworldly and relaxing atmosphere during the massage.
