Richmond has 11 public golf courses located within its city limits. These public courses range from city-run courses to award-winning semi-private courses. According to the Mayo Clinic, walking 18 holes of golf will help you reach the recommendation of 10,000 steps per day for fitness. Plan to walk the course and reach a daily fitness goal all while getting to enjoy hitting the ball around the links.

Top Rated

The Providence Golf Course in Richmond was awarded four and a half stars by Golf Digest, the top rating given to any course in Richmond. This 18-hole championship course was designed by Lester George and is par-71. The facility features a golf shop that provides golf lessons and a driving range. This course is open year-round and as of 2010 charges greens fees of $35 to $56 depending on time of year and time of day. The course also offers senior and junior discounts. To lengthen your workout, in addition to playing a round, spend some time at the driving range and chipping green working on your swing.

Municipal Course

There is one municipal course located in Richmond. This course, the Belmont Golf Course, opened in 1916 as a private course and was designed by A.W. Tillinghast and then reworked by Donald Ross. This hilly course is par-71. The course became public in 1967 and as of 2010 charges greens fees of $21 to $25 depending on time of day and time of year. The course provides discounts for local residents, seniors and juniors. Tee times can be reserved online via the course’s website. Due to the hilly nature of this course, you will get an increased cardiovascular workout compared to a flat course.

Historic Course

The Glenwood Golf Club in Richmond is one of the oldest public golf courses in the state of Virginia and is the oldest course in the Richmond area. The Glenwood course opened in 1927 and was designed by Fred Findlay. Glenwood has a par of 71 and features natural hazards. The course is open seven days a week, 364 days a year from sunrise to sunset. As of 2010, the course charges $13 to $39 for greens fees depending on time of day and time of year. If you are planning on walking the course for exercise, note that before 10:00 a.m. on weekends and holidays, the course requires carts.

Nine Hole Course

Richmond’s Independence Golf Club has both an 18-hole course and a shorter 9-hole golf course. The nine-hole course was designed by Tom Fazio and is ideal for families, junior golfers or individuals short on time. Fazio designed this course for golfers who want to work on their short game. Tee times at this course can be made up to two weeks in advance. Walking is allowed on this short course. As of 2010, the course charges $15 on weekdays and $18 on weekends to walk the course.

Rental and Lessons

If you are unable to bring your clubs with you, most of the golf courses offer golf clubs for rental. Pro shops should have clubs for both right and left-handed golfers in a variety of sizes. Additionally, all listed courses have a PGA Professional on staff for golf lessons or clinics.
